She was so curious about Hell that she always asked others what Hell looked like, but no one was sure, because none of them had ever been there. Some said Hell was a place full of water, and others told her that Hell was full of burning fire. However, the bird knew they were lying. She wanted to find out what Hell was.
When other birds were learning flying skills, she always hid herself and watched them. She thought in this way she could go to Hell and see what Hell looked like. However, she couldn’t escape. Day after day, she just stayed in the cage, watching other birds flying. She lost her freedom and she became sadder and sadder. At last, she became ill. Mary Somerville was born in
Mary was one of the world’s first famous female maths. She became interested in mathematics and decided to study it at the time when it was considered unacceptable for a woman to do so. She bought books on algebra and geometry and read them at night. In spite of disapproval from people around her, she firmly went on with her struggle to learn. She won a prize for her solution to an algebra problem. She went on to write several books on mathematics. Later in her life, she thought deeply about the years in which she had persevered (坚持) almost without hope and said, “It taught me never to lose heart.”
Mary’s way of learning remains useful today. If she worked for a while on a problem without coming up with an idea, she stopped working and turned her attention to the piano, her needlework, or a walk outdoors. She then returned to the problem with a fresh mind and a solution turned up. If she could not understand a passage while reading, she would forget about it and read on; several pages later, the meaning of the puzzling passage would become clear to her.

Ms Keller often said, “Without Anne Sullivan, the name of Helen Keller would have remained unknown.”
As a little girl, Sullivan was no stranger to hardship (困苦). She almost couldn’t see anything and was, at one time, locked in a dark underground room of a mental institution (精神病院) because of mental problems. Little Annie Sullivan would attack anyone who came near sometimes. However, an elderly nurse believed there was hope and she offered to help the child. Every day she made all her efforts to give little Annie words of love and encouragement.
At last, doctors noticed a change in the girl. They ever saw anger and hostility (敌意) in her eyes, while now they noticed a little gentleness and love. They moved her upstairs where she continued to become better. Then the day finally came when this seemingly “hopeless” child was released.
Anne Sullivan grew into a young woman with a desire to help others as she, herself, was helped by the kind nurse. It was she who saw hope in Helen Keller. She loved her, played with her until the flickering candle became a bright light to the world. Anne Sullivan brought wonders into Helen’s life. But without that kind and warm-hearted nurse, how could little Annie become such a kind-hearted teacher?
And so it goes. Just how far back does the chain of love extend? And how far forward will it lead?
You can never ignore the power of your love. It is a fire that, once lit, may burn forever.

Few laws are so effective that you can see results just days after they take effect. But in the nine days since the federal cigarette tax more than doubled-to $1.01 per pack-smokers have jammed telephone “quit lines” across the country seeking to kick the habit.
This is not a surprise to public health advocates. They've studied the effect of state tax increases for years, finding that smokers, especially teens, are price sensitive.Nor is it a shock to the industry, which fiercely fights every tax increase.
The only wonder is that so many states insist on closing their ears to the message.Tobacco (烟草)taxes improve public health, they raise money and most particularly, they deter people from taking up the habit as teens, which is when nearly all smokers are addicted.Yet the rate of taxation varies widely.
In Manhattan, for instance, which has the highest tax in the nation,a pack of Marlboro Light Kings, cost $10.06 at one drugstore Wednesday. In Charleston,S.C.,where the 7 cent a pack tax is the lowest in the nation, the price was $4.78.
The influence is obvious.
In New York, high school smoking hit a new low in the latest surveys-13.8%,far below the national average. By comparison,26% of high school students smoke in
Hal Rogers,Representative from Kentucky, like those who are against high tobacco taxes, argues that the burden of the tax falls on low income Americans “who choose to smoke.” That's true. But there is more reason in keeping future generations of low income workers from getting attracted in the first place. As for today's adults,if the new tax drives them to quit, they will have more to spend on their families, cut their risk of cancer and heart disease and feel better.
72.The text is mainly about ________.
A.the price of cigarettes B.the rate of teen smoking
C.the effect of tobacco tax increase D.the differences in tobacco tax rate
73.What does the author think is a surprise?
A.Teen smokers are price sensitive. B.Some states still keep the tobacco tax low.
C.Tobacco taxes improve public health. D.Tobacco industry fiercely fights the tax rise.
74.Rogers' attitude towards the low income smokers might be that of ________.
A.tolerance B.unconcern C.doubt D.sympathy
75.What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A.The new tax will be beneficial in the long run.
B.Low income Americans are more likely to fall ill.
C.Future generations will be hooked on smoking.
D.Adults will depend more on their families.

第四部分:写作(共两节,满分35分)
第一节:任务型读写(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)
阅读下面短文,根据所读内容在表格的空白出填入恰当的单词。注意:每空仅填一个单词。
If we agree that the function of education is to prepare us for life, then there is very little time to waste. So, while we can, we ought to concentrate on teaching children something really useful. Here is what our school should teach..
Politeness is a mark of civilization. The sooner children learn this, the better. In any case, a lot can be accomplished by a smile and good manners.
Like it or not, our adult lives will be consumed by the struggle for money, but we don't make an effort to teach children how to manage it. So our schools have a duty to teach them this ability from the beginning.
We're likely to accept something we are told, but that's not what educated people do. Educated people are reasonable and they look at facts. If our schools teach nothing else, they should at least teach critical(批判性的)thinking
Children should learn to take care of their health. They should know that if they eat junk food(垃圾食品), they will become fat and unhealthy. They should be very clear about what happens to their bodies when they drink or smoke.
All of us are part of society. We have rights and responsibilities. We ought to understand what they are. We have to know a little bit of history and geography, because we need to have an environment in which to relate to the people around us.
How will we test students on these? We can't. But that's not a reason to avoid teaching what is important. Our schools should spend every moment they have telling this to our children: "This is life, this is what you are going to face, and this is how you deal with it."

One Thing I'm Proud of
Last summer I spent one month in California as a visiting student.I had to study at a school and stay at a host family. There were seven people in their family, including the parents, four sisters and one little brother.During the one-month stay,I had to adapt myself to their American lifestyle and help them understand the best part of Chinese culture. With my great efforts, they all became my best friends,or rather I had become a member of the family.
I have proved that friendship can help while in a different country. In a word, being able to win their friendship in a very short time is the thing that I am proud of most in my life.
